Animation idea

We practiced using a similar style of animation to that of the A-Ha video Take on me. This involved using real footage to then be projected onto paper and then traced around.

This is the original image that we used

This is the projected trace around that we produced, although only a really rough sketch it shows our idea that we might use for animation.

Take on Me -A-ha

When we first thought of cartoon work, this was one of the music videos that came to mind. Take on Me by A-Ha is a creative music video which uses a cartoon effect that which we admire.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPgMTIgwS6s&feature=related

Apparently the cartoon effect used is through having each scene was shot live and then projected onto paper in which then traced.

This effect is one we would like to replicate for our video. It seems achieveable and Jon has a projecter at home. He's going to have a go at home and if successful, then we have many ideas in store!

Pitch Feedback

After we gave our pitch to the class, we received some feedback on our idea.

One of the key points of the feedback, was the consideration of time. This is a key area as for our idea, we need to finish the animation before we can start filming our real performance.

Another key point of our feedback, was to consider the design of our characters, as none of our group are able to draw very well. We replied with confidence with referring to some of our friends whom are art students whom which have said they would be delighted to help out.

Our pitch was OK, we could've done better I feel as we did lack organisation on who was going to say what and we didn't use the blog to our full advanatage.

Digi Pack Ideas

The DVD Cover idea is going to be styled in a similar way to the animation of the music video, through the use of the scrapbook theme. The DVD cover will be in the style of the front page of the scrapbook with the name, artist and title fields of it in the style of a school book.

The Magazine advert will again continue the theme of the scrapbook style, with a library background of books on shelves. We will also have both the dvd cover and the cd album cover in the advert advertising the digi pack. We will also feature the main characters of the animation in the cover to keep with the continuity of the theme.

Pitch brief

Pitch

We want to show the raw emotion of the song, capturing memories, pastimes and emotional journeys to create an impact on the audience. To encapsulate the viewer into the music video is our goal.

We want to use animation to present memories to the audience, which will add a tainted memory feel to it, the idea is to draw out each particular scene to capture the meaning of each scene so that the video is universal to whatever audience making it internationally understandable.

Particular examples of using animation such as JCB Song by Nizlopi puts the audience on a journey in a kids life, the audience are interested in the video because of it’s unique concept of animated drawings. We are aiming to create a similar atmosphere for our music video by giving the audience a view of the life of the artist.

For the artist, we aim to use Nugget performing with the upright piano situated in the drama studio. By drawing the curtains to blacken out the performance area and to turn on a spotlight pointing at the piano, the piano stool and of course Nugget. Close ups of Nugget playing the piano at the beginning in which throughout using a dolly panning around the performance area so you get a feel of the loneliness of the artist with nobody around.

Goodwin's points

Correlation between the products

We are using the animation theme due to the influence of the Nizlopi - JCB song, we are using the scrap book theme for the music video, DVD album cover and the magazine advert.

Goodwin's points

We have intertextuality from the animation as we stylise our video using the JCB song from Nizlopi reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet famous balcony scene . There are also links between lyrics and visuals for example "Jainy stares at stars every night" where in the music video you will the two main characters on a hill looking at stars where a shooting star shoots by. It is voyeuristic with the live performance in the video as it focusing mainly on the artist and also in the animation because it is looking at his memories. The genre of the music reflects the performance in the music video as it focuses solely on the artist playing and singing. The relationship between the music and visuals is shown via the piano in the live performance also within the introduction of the music video is a close up of the artist's face therefore it is meeting the demands of the record label of showing close ups of the artist.

Other Features

Location

We will film the real performance parts of the video in the Drama studio at college, as there is a piano already in there, and the room is easily turned into a dark room. Also there will be lights that we can use to create our desired effect.

Colour

Both the animation and the performance will be in black and white, to show consistency between the two, and also set the atmosphere of the music videos as many emotional songs feature the video in grayscale.

Tone

The atmosphere we are trying to communicate with our video is mainly emotion and love. This will be created through the use of colour and pace.

Pace

The pace of the video will be quite slow to match the speed of the music. This may be quite challenging to create animation pieces that are slow enough.

Narrative ideas for animation

Here are the images for our ideas for the animation

This image is the first narrative of our animation. It will be an illustration of the lyrics for the first verse, specifically the line 'Seems I found to find her just as well'.

This image will be the second narrative of the animation, which shows the characters together in a similar format to that of Romeo and Juliet.

This is the third narrative of the animation, which like the first narrative does produce an illustration of the lyrics, specifically the line 'Jainy stares at stars every night'.

This is the fourth narrative, which like the second, it shows the two characters together. This scene will last slightly longer as it plays through an instrumental, it zooms from the animation to the real life performance at the end.

In between the many narratives we will constantly cut back to the real performance of the artist on the piano, who will look at the scrap book.

Initial Ideas

Our main idea is to have a cross between a performance of the artist and an animation in the form of a scrap book.

The performance scene is going to appear as a dark room, with a spotlight, showing the artist playing the piano and singing to the song

The animation part of the video will be a narrative style animation, consisting of several little narratives.

The main style of the animation will be in a cartoon scrap book that will be animated with hand drawn style objects and backgrounds. It will be similar to the idea of the JCB Song by Nizlopi.

Here is a shot of the Nizlopi song:
